The mature erythrocytes of fishes vary greatly in their shape and outline, and in peripheral blood they are mostly mature. In deep sea teleosts, the size of the RBC is larger than normal teleosts. Glazova (1977) reported that erythrocytes are slightly smaller in active species than in non-active. According to Shrivastava and Griffith (1974), the brackish water species of Fundulus have smaller blood cell than freshwater species. The RBC size is larger in elasmobranchs in comparison to teleosts. The nucleus is centrally placed and round or oblong in shape (Fig. ![]() However, under similar conditions, a fairly constant number of reticulocytes are present in species. ![]() The number of erythrocyte in blood varies according to the species as well as the age of the individual, season and environmental conditions. In adult teleosts, the blood normally contains a certain percentage of immature red cells or senescent cells (growing cells) called pro-erythrocytes or reticulocytes. These polychromatophilic erythroblast are often called reticulocytes. Because of double staining the cell is called a polychromatophilic erythroblast. The cytoplasm takes eosin stain due to haemoglobin and basophilia due to staining of the ribosomes. Due to the accumulation of ultra-cellular protein, the changes in the staining reaction of cytoplasm occurs because of haemoglobin which stain with eosin. Mature erythrocytes contain abundant haemoglobin and are pink or yellowish on preparation stained with Giemsa.ĭuring the growth of RBC firstly the cytoplasm shows strong basophilia because of the presence of polyribosomes. The cytoplasm of RBC is coppery purplish, coppery pinkish or light bluish in Indian freshwater teleosts. 7.1 a-j)ĭawson (1933) classified immature erythrocytes into five categories according to structure, distribution and quantity of basophilic substances within the cell. If the blood is collected in the vial without any anticoagulant, then the blood will coagulate and if this is centrifuged, then the liquid portion is known as ‘serum’.Īctually the serum has lost the clotting factor prothrombin and fibrinogen but the plasma contains clotting factor proteins also. ![]() If the blood is collected in a vial containing an anticoagulant, the blood will not coagulate and if centrifuged, the blood cells will be separated and settle down, the liquid portion is known as ‘plasma’.
